The New Abstracts
You may wonder why I call these “The New Abstracts” when there are clearly faces in two of the series. Well, they all came together at the same time in a burst of color and texture, combining defined shapes, hard-edges along side soft gradations.
This series is an outgrowth of the Quilt Series where “I have become interested in what emotions and feelings can be conveyed through the use of color, line, texture etc. Harmony, discord, counterpoint.”
In The New Abstracts I used brightly colored archival sticks to draw. In some I cut larger drawn pieces which I glued together to form new juxtapositions. In some I glazed the drawings with a mat medium to create an added tooth to the surface which pulled out more of the medium and added rich and buttery texture to the hues. This gave an ease, a luscious feeling to the drawings which made me want to explore the possibilities of color and contrast along side delicate gradations of hue.
Leaving the confines of linear thought and the look of our world, I enjoyed exploring a myriad of varied textures colors and patterns.
