Altars

The Altars are in a way a continuation of The Ladies. They are built with wood, findings of different kinds of board glued on top. The faces are sculpted with layers of mixed resins. In a true mixture of mediums, they are painted with oil, casein, acrylic and collaged pieces of my drawings and prints.
They hang on the wall like a painting although the face is three-dimensional and there is usually a shelf at the bottom.
The Altars are not directly religious although there seems to be an overtone of deity there. They deal more with our earth and humanity. In Her Altar she wears a halo of deck screws. Over her heart is a door made of bark that can be opened. Inside is a reflective paper which will give you a skewed version of your own face if you look carefully. In Earth Altar children’s alphabet blocks spell out - my earth rx (prescription) soon.... On her forehead is a music phrase from a Chopin waltz I played as a child. In Air Altar it’s like she’s above a magical city.
These have all been built with the great joy and excitement of combining sculpture, carpentry, painting and drawing.
