I am intrigued with the delicacy and simplicity of pencil on paper. There is a certain sound when the pencil feathers the paper, a whisper, softly repeated in one direction and an opposing direction which over time builds into a delicately moving surface of off-white gray to almost black. Somehow when this is going on, there is a perfect rightness to the world.
It is often in winter that I return to pencil and paper. There is a starkness to creating with one small tool that I link in my mind with the honesty of winter trees.
During a difficult Winter I draw women curled up, almost fetal in their attempt to be safe in the world. In gentler times I enjoy the beauty of babies and the relationship between mother and child.
I plan to revisit this simple world of paper and pencil many more times in my career and look forward to discovering new paths there.
